now on sale, featuring rescued dogs which have been rehomed. Hank, a bright, lovely and playful animal, according to trust manager Pam Howard, has been without a home since October. Mrs Howard said many people had wanted to adopt Hank,

Residents will be told of the secret sites before public consultation is opened in late January. The issue of where a skate park is located has been a hot potato for nearly two decades. So controversial is it, that Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board members have been sworn to secrecy over the possible sites until residents living near them are told. Normally outspoken board member Darrell Latham said: “Until such time as it has gone out for consultation we’ve all been advised that we can’t breach confidentiality. I’d love to be able to tell you but I’d get hung, drawn and quartered. “ Another board member, Tim Lindley, echoed Dr Latham, confirming the board had discussed the list but had been advised not to talk to media: “I know what it is, I think it’s good, I think good things will come of it but we’ll just have to wait and see.” •Turn to page 5

from the editor’s desk I’M A bit of a dog sort of person. Others might say I’m a dog of a bloke, and if they do, I’d probably take it as a compliment. That’s why I’ve featured the 2018 Dogwatch calendar in today’s paper. The calendar is a fundraiser for this great organisation and the canines which feature in it are ones that they have rescued and rehomed. The system works like this: The dogs which end up in council pounds have seven days to be collected. The pounds then have the unenviable job of giving them the chop or rehoming them. This is where Dogwatch comes in. If there’s room, unwanted dogs are taken in and then the search for a suitable home begins. Hank, who features on page 1, has been at Dogwatch since late October. He has a few quirks but otherwise is a lovely dog, as most border collies are. Photographer Martin Hunter said he played ball for the pic. It would be nice for Hank to have a home. Give Dogwatch a call on 981 4708. Chef stars in new food book By Sarla Donovan ROOTS Restaurant, chef Jonny Schwass, Otakaro Orchard, and the urban farm, Cultivate Christchurch, all feature in a new book about food. Kai and culture: Food stories from Aotearoa takes a closer look at New Zealand’s emerging food identity. It explores current trends around growing, making and eating food through essays, profiles and recipes. Chef and co-owner of Lyttelton’s multi-award-winning Roots Restaurant, Giulio Sturla, features in the book. Writer Aaron McLean tells the story of the chef’s journey to New Zealand from Chile, setting up Roots with his wife Christy five years ago, and subsequently shaking up the New Zealand food scene. Although the food served at Roots bears little resemblance to what most of us cook on an average evening, Mr Sturla said that was exactly how he liked it. He wants to create an appetite and a market for foods that aren’t readily accessible to most Kiwis – like scampi, paua, crayfish, truffles and certain types of vegetables. His argument goes like this: Because producers don’t think there is a market here, consum-

ers end up paying export prices. “There are so many foods available in New Zealand but not for everyday people. They’re there, but they’re costly for households and many people may not even know how to get hold of them. There isn’t a 24/7 farmers’ market or fish market here (for example).” He would also like Christchurch restaurants to develop more of a focus on their food. “I’d like to see smaller restau-
rants with an ingredient-focused kitchen – these big kitchens aren’t sustainable. Christchurch doesn’t have enough people. The only way to make them (financially viable) is through alcohol sales. Why do you have to create a big bar and hide the kitchen? I’d like to see more balance between alcohol and food. So many new places focus on the fit out, rather than making an interesting menu.” Roots was one of only eight

In Brief DYERS PASS SPEED LIMIT More than 500 submissions were received on proposed changes to speed limits on Dyers Pass Rd. The city council is looking at introducing a flat speed limit of 60km/h from the Sign of the Takahe to the intersection of Governors Bay and Dyers Pass Rds. It also wants to put no-passing lines along some sections. Consultation on the proposals closed last week. The Banks Peninsula and SpreydonCashmere community boards will make a decision on the nopassing lines by March, while the city council has the final say on speed limits. RUBBISH COLLECTIONS As New Year’s Day falls on a Monday, the city council’s Monday rubbish collection will move to Tuesday, the Tuesday collection to Wednesday, the Wednesday collection to Thursday, the Thursday collection to Friday, and the Friday collection to Saturday. Normal collection resumes from Monday, January 8. All eco-drops and transfer stations will be closed on New Year’s Day. Libraries will have variable opening days/times until January 3.

But Mr Sturla is adamant his restaurant wouldn’t work anywhere else but Lyttelton, and he plans to keep on doing exactly what he has been. Historical links to Redcliffs fountain feature of restoration
By Sarla Donovan THE DRINKING fountain in front of Barnett Park, Redcliffs, has been restored with help from some of the residents involved in its installation more than 40 years ago. The fountain fell over after the February 22, 2011, earthquake, and has been out of action since. Now the Rotary Club of Linwood-Woolston has paid to fix the fountain, which was repaired by Willcox Plumbing last week. Redcliffs resident Neralie Brittenden approached the club three years ago after the city council told her the repairs were well down its list of priorities. She discovered one of the club’s members had a strong connection with the fountain. The club’s chairman at the time of its installation and now secretary, architect Gerald Austin, designed the original seating area where the fountain had been placed in the early 1970s. The original fountain was installed by Jack Willcox, of Willcox Plumbing, who was also a club member. He was helped out by his son Barry. Jack died earlier this year, and this time, it was Barry who helped repair the fountain. The Rotary club also put in new seating several months ago. Mr Austin said the club has had a long association with Barnett Park. “In the good old days, we used to have a fair, which was a great occasion. We planted trees down the bottom of the park, which are now grown, so we do have a connection.”

Doggone good calendars •From page 1 Hank is one of 12 dogs the trust is currently trying to rehome. In a bid to continue rehoming abandoned dogs, the trust has teamed up with Community Energy Action to create the 2018 calendar. The calendar’s message focuses on raising awareness about the rescuing and rehoming of abandoned dogs and aims to educate people about energy efficiency. “It is a combined effort that has gone down very well. Some dogs just do not cope with cold weather,” Mrs Howard said. The trust has been producing calendars since about 2011. Funds raised go towards the operation of the rescue centre. “We have always had huge support from the community but this year we were sponsored by CEA. They have done a fantastic job,” Mrs Howard said. Dogwatch is a charitable trust which rescues and rehomes dogs and puppies that have ended up in the Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri pounds. After a seven-day holding period, the council becomes the legal owner and either rehomes the dog or puts it down.

Wainoni Avonside Community Services Trust co-ordinator Betty Chapman said she “couldn’t believe how generous people were.” The party was attended by 70 people from 12 different groups run by the trust throughout the year. Mrs Chapman said she has never received so much support. “People have come out of the woodwork, and you should see this bench – it’s full of food,” she said. Mrs Chapman said the party, which took two weeks to plan, was about spreading joy. “Companionship and being happy . . . it sounds simple but it’s true, that’s what’s important.” Mrs Chapman said the trust was able to use some of the left

Pipeline construction to begin soon CONSTRUCTION OF two submarine pipelines to carry wastewater from Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour to Lyttelton will begin in February. The 5km and 1.8km pipelines are part of a $53 million scheme that will end the discharge of treated wastewater into Lyttelton Harbour by 2021. Currently, wastewater from Lyttelton, Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour is treated before being discharged through outfall pipelines into the harbour. Under the new scheme untreated wastewater from Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour will be carried through the submarine pipelines to a new pump station on Simeon Quay in Lyttelton. It will then be piped through the Lyttelton Tunnel to the Ferrymead pump station and onto the Bromley wastewater treatment plant, where it will

be treated. From there it will be discharged out to sea through the Christchurch Ocean Outfall. City council service general manager David Adamson said the pipelines will be buried about 1m deep into the seabed, which is sufficiently deep to prevent anchors catching or the pipes being damaged in storms, tsunamis or earthquakes. “Construction of the marine pipelines will involve pre-fabrication of pipe strings onshore before they are joined together and bottom-pulled out to the required location. A backhoe dredger will then be employed
to excavate the trench, lower the pipeline and backfill it,’’ Mr Adamson said. Contractors McConnell Dowell have built several marine outfall pipes, including the Christchurch Ocean Outfall eight years ago. On-site work being done by NZTA installing the wastewater line through the Lyttelton Tunnel was recently delayed with problems manufacturing the overseas-made pipe. But this will not affect the construction of the harbour pipelines, which are expected to be completed by early 2019.

Letters from Santa thrill pre-schoolers By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CHILDREN ACROSS Canterbury received a Christmas surprise in the mail – a personalised letter from the big man in the red suit. The letters from Santa Claus travelled all the way from the North Pole to children in Canterbury. The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery in West Melton was one of thousands of pre-schools and primary schools in New Zealand to receive the letters. Children from the pre-school’s inventors, adventure and navigator classrooms had their letters handed out at its Christmas concert. With a bit of help from New Zealand Post, Santa sent about 73,000 letters to children from 1102 schools and early childhood education centres across the country. The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery owner Tracy Summerfield said the children were “blown away” and appreciated the nice gesture from New
Zealand Post. She said being given the opportunity to write letters to Santa was great for the children’s literacy skills. Hatchimals, dolls, toy tractors, trucks, racing cars and rugby-themed toys were popular requests made to Santa by children at the pre-school. LOL Surprise Dolls, Baby Alive Dolls, Nerf guns and TV character toys from the films Frozen and PAW Patrol were common requests from children nationwide. But as Santa reminded them in his letter: “Christmas is more than just about presents. Its about celebrating with your friends and family.” New Zealand Post has been helping letters get to and from Santa for the past 19 years. A New Zealand Post spokeswoman said it wanted to bring joy to people at Christmas and help keep the magic of Santa alive. “Receiving a letter from Santa is a magical moment for a child and being a postal business we can play a role in facilitating that moment,” she said.

She then began her 25-year teaching career in the independent schools’ sectors across the UK and New Zealand. “It is a privilege to be entrusted by parents with the task of providing their child with the essential foundation for their education, their foundation for life,” Ms Tattershaw said. She is also a keen sportswoman, having played hockey and water polo up to international level in her youth. She is now kept busy as senior coach with the Harewood Hockey Club.

Hillmorton High School year 10 students stayed active on their camp at Living Springs. In the evenings, the students enjoyed roasting marshmallows on an open fire and during the days they did archery, tree climbing and swum at Rapaki Bay. Some year 12 students helped lead the younger students through the activities.

BARBECUE RUMP STEAK WITH SMOKY RED CAPSICUM SAUCE
1 Tbsp smoked paprika 1 red chilli, finely diced ½ cup olive oil
Ingredients
4 pieces of rump steak 1 serving oil, for grilling
2 roasted red capsicums, peeled, seeded and chopped ½ red onion, chopped ¼ cup chopped parsley 4 cloves garlic, chopped ¼ cup red wine vinegar ¼ cup red wine 1 Tbsp honey 1 Tbsp dijon mustard
Directions To roast the capsicum, place it straight on to the flames in the barbecue and rotate until all of the outside is blackened. Place in a plastic bag and tie a knot in the top to make the capsicum sweat so the skin is easier to remove.

Thinly slice the cucumber. Place on a plate and scatter with the salt, sugar, dill and mint. Leave to cure for two hours then pat dry before serving with the salad. Scrub the mussels, remove any beards then steam until just open. Chop into quarters. Slice the tomatoes then arrange with the cucumber and mussels on a platter. Scatter with basil leaves and drizzle with olive oil.

Charities get proceeds from Eastgate present wrapping
By Sarla Donovan THE PRESENT wrapping booth at Eastgate Shopping Centre offered something a bit different for busy Christmas shoppers this year. It was run by charities, which supplied volunteers to wrap presents for a gold coin donation – all of which went to help the cause. Last week the SPCA was running the booth, but centre manager Monique Burke said there had been various other groups involved at different times. “We have had Plunket, Aviva Family Violence Services, the Canterbury Charity Hospital and the City to Sumner Community Watch patrol. We like to help charities as much as we can; this was a way to provide a service to customers and the money goes to a good cause.” The centre provided the wrapping paper, tape and scissors, while the actual wrapping itself was done by charity volunteers. Most of the charities involved had worked with the shopping centre throughout the year, said Miss Burke. The booth has
